Are you hands-on, passionate about working outdoors, and committed to animal welfare? The Statia Government is seeking a dedicated Extension Officer to support the management of free-roaming animals while promoting sustainable farming practices across the island.
This versatile role is based at the LVV Unit (Agriculture, Animal Husbandry, and Fisheries) and reports to the ENI Directorate (Economic, Nature, and Infrastructure Development). You will play a central role in enforcing the ban on free-roaming animals (APV 29-2018, Article 3.3.3), while actively supporting livestock farmers, veterinarians, and community outreach.
Enforce the removal of free-roaming animals in line with legal and welfare standards.
Apply humane methods such as trapping, tranquilising, or selective culling.
Transport animals safely to designated facilities or disposal locations.
Maintain accurate daily logs of enforcement actions, materials, and ammunition used.
Visit farms to advise on animal health, nutrition, and sustainable productivity.
Deliver workshops and demonstrations for local farmers.
Identify needs for inputs such as feed, tools, fencing, or machinery.
Collaborate with other agricultural experts and contribute to LVV programmes.
Assist in vaccination campaigns, health checks, and parasite control.
Support data tracking and reporting on animal health and welfare.
Help raise public awareness around responsible pet ownership and veterinary care.
Operate effectively in challenging outdoor conditions, including rough terrain and high temperatures.
Use hunting tools and firearms safely and responsibly, following all protocols.
Maintain equipment and participate in training on humane and sustainable practices.
Operate heavy and light agricultural machinery and equipment.
Submit daily activity reports to the LVV Manager.
Coordinate efforts with Veterinary Services and external stakeholders.
Build relationships with farmers, agricultural partners, and enforcement agencies.
This position is for an initial period of one year. The salary is in scale 10, with a minimum of $4,099.58 and a maximum of $5,320.73 gross per month, based on a 36-hour work week. These amounts are in accordance with the salary table of the Statia Government dated 4 December 2024. Placement within the scale is dependent on qualifications and experience.

The successful candidate must provide a Certificate of Good Conduct (VOG) and undergo a medical examination. An assessment and reference check may form part of the selection process.

HBO degree or higher (Bachelor’s or equivalent).
Proven field experience in farming, wildlife management, or veterinary work.
Valid firearms licence and demonstrated shooting proficiency.
Physically fit and able to work in demanding field environments.
Knowledge of sustainable agriculture, erosion control, and climate-smart practices.
Strong communication and reporting skills.
