Sagicor Life Jamaica Limited is seeking to identify a suitable candidate to join our Group IT team in the capacity of: Manager Application Support.

 

The selected candidate will manage a team of programmers/systems analysts to solve critical issues of the core systems, as well as, enhance current business as usual application tasks.

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Evaluates and undertakes impact analysis on major application and takes a leading role in proposing technical solutions within area of expertise.
  • Takes responsibility for investigative work to seek effective resolution on production issues.
  • Utilizes business experience and skills to assess and advise on the practicability of alternatives.
  • Check, instruct, assign work and functionally direct Programmers/ Systems Analysts.  
  • Design, code, modify existing programs, execute acceptance testing using different tools where necessary and debug as required.
  • Plans, arranges and controls meetings, workshops and training with client/user staff during system investigations and throughout subsequent development work
  • Fulfill reporting requirements concerning assigned duties, including problem experienced.
  • Prescribes standards for the terms and symbols used in program documentation.
  • Set guidelines for the preparation of policies and procedures manuals.
  • Undertakes all work in accordance with required technical and quality standards and using appropriate methods and tools in order to ensure all applications are monitored.
  • Coordinate the preparation of detailed support documentation on the operation of programs.
  • Periodically reassesses and update documents
  • Recommend program changes to increase operating efficiency or to adapt to new systems requirements.
  • Modify application software to include corrective maintenance.
  • Apply automated and manual tools including ‘black box’ and ‘white box’ testing, to test and evaluate systems and networks under production.
  • Perform thorough unit testing and peer review to ensure that quality output of development is maintained.
  • Takes responsibility for the definition, documentation and execution of one or more small-scale projects, providing effective leadership to team members.
  • Monitors all support activities against service level agreements, providing regular and accurate reports to senior management, and client/user management as appropriate.
  • Maintains links with appropriate counterparts within both software engineering and service delivery functions.
  • Maintains contact with larger software and hardware vendors for support and to remain informed of developments within the industry.
  • Communicate with core system vendors.
  • Evaluates the performance of team members against the unit’s objectives to ensure that they are appraised and assessed in accordance with agreed standards, procedures and timetables where applicable.
  • Works with the Quality Control Officer, and Business Owners to ensure that the defined Business Requirements are effectively satisfied in the solution.
  • Participates and provides leadership to the positions supervised through use of timely and effective communication, guidance and support
  • Works with vendors to ensure accurate satisfaction of defined specifications
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of standard languages, coding methods, operations requirements, and technological developments
  • Provide appropriate professional advice, assistance and liaison to colleagues within the department and to clients as necessary
  • Maintain continuous learning through participation in seminars, webinars, workshops, certifications etc.

 

Academic Qualifications/Specialized Skills/Competencies:

  • Bachelor’s degree in IT, Computer Science, Mathematics, Enterprise Computing or equivalent training
  • Five (5) years demonstrated work experience in programming, debugging and systems analysis. Project Management experience would be an asset
  • Minimum of (1) year working experience in the financial sector
  • Minimum of (1) year supervisory experience
  • Experience in object-oriented languages (Java / C++ / .NET)
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
  • Knowledge and experience with the Software Development Lifecycle
  • Experience in structured reviews, software testing and testing tools
  • Proficient in System Development Life Cycle methodologies
  • Demonstrated ability to design and develop moderately complex programs and program modifications
  • Experience in application systems integration of average complexity
  • Exposure to leadership programs/seminars/forums
  • Demonstrated ability for quickly and efficiently solving ongoing problems/change requests for multiple application systems of average complexity and timelines for both local and group-wide solutions.
  • Exposure to networks, databases, operating systems, hardware and other IT environmental components for mainframe, midrange and PC based systems.
  • Working knowledge of the process for the installation and maintenance of application software for multi-user computer systems
  • In-depth working knowledge of, Java, C, C++, Visual Basic
  • In-depth knowledge of various operating systems, including Linux and Windows
  • Working knowledge of Power Builder would be an asset
  • In-depth working knowledge of project management methodologies and techniques
  • Strong ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Working knowledge of Database Management Systems specifically and SQL Server and Oracle
  • Strong appreciation of Information Security
  • Results oriented, sound time management and organizational skills
